“There’s a storm brewing in Nantucket over a local coverage story about Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy – who tells Page Six anyone offended by the article can ‘fuck themselves. “

The exclusive Enclave’s brilliant N Magazine recently apologized for featuring Portnoy on its May cover – after receiving negative feedback from readers – in a move Portnoy calls “thornless.”

Publisher Bruce Percelay and Editor-in-Chief Robert Cocuzzo released a statement on Friday saying that since the issue – which features a glowing profile on Portnoy’s charitable effort to raise funds for small businesses – was released, they have “heard from various members of our community who vehemently expressed subject.” They added: “[W]We formally apologize for any pain caused to those who objected to this May cover.

Here are the excuses:

“To our readers,

Since our May issue came out a week ago, we’ve heard from various members of our community who vehemently oppose our current coverage featuring Dave Portnoy. While the story was intended to highlight Mr. Portnoy’s work on behalf of small businesses, a number of people in the community took issue with the offensive remarks and actions he has made in the past. We never want to hurt, offend or disappoint any of our readers with the stories we publish. Accordingly, we formally apologize for any harm caused to those who objected to this May cover.

As a medium, our stories are never endorsements of our topics. We’ve featured politicians on both sides of the aisle, media and sports figures, and sometimes controversial public figures whose actions and opinions are entirely theirs. Our goal is to report on stories that we believe are relevant to our readers and to Nantucket.

In the case of Mr. Portnoy, a Nantucket owner who has already been widely described by other publications on the island and has worked with a number of Nantucket businesses, we felt that his recent fundraiser for small business was timely news. We now recognize and acknowledge our oversight in how this story would be received. We appreciate feedback, positive or not, because ultimately it helps make us a better post going forward.

For nearly twenty years, N Magazine has been dedicated to improving life on the island, from highlighting inspiring stories to supporting local nonprofits. We remain committed to this mission and to serving the interests of our readers. “

Portnoy is just one of those guys who will always be a controversial magnet.

He’s a polarizing guy.
